Plastic Free Alternatives for Your Personal Care Routine!

Plastic-Free Alternatives for your Personal Care Routine!

A great place to introduce more eco-friendly and zero-waste practices is in your personal care routine! The products that I will be talking about are all plastic-free switches I have made on my journey to living a greener lifestyle. Whether you’re looking for some easy swaps to make to participate in #plasticfreeJuly, or are looking to make more permanent eco-friendly lifestyle changes, these alternatives are a great place to start!

    All-Natural (+ Refillable) Toothpaste

An easy and fun plastic-free swap to make is switching to zero-waste toothpaste! There are a couple of options for this change: you can switch to using crush + brush tablets or refillable paste. Nelson naturals is an amazing Canadian company that has both zero-waste toothpaste options. The tablets are great for travelling, you simply crush them between your teeth so it creates a fizz and start brushing! The other option is their natural paste, which come in glass take-home jars that you can easily refill in-store. Since making the switch, my teeth feel just as clean and I feel great knowing I won’t be throwing out tubes of plastic that take an estimated 500 years to decompose.

    Bamboo Toothbrush

In a similar vein, another easy swap you can make is switching to a bamboo toothbrush, which gets tossed in the compost! This is something that might not seem like a big switch but on average, we throw out about 3 toothbrushes a year. Multiply 3 toothbrushes for every person in Canada (37 million) and that’s 111 million toothbrushes tossed in the landfill annually. So this is another simple, feel-good swap that will have a huge positive impact on the environment!

    Shampoo + Conditioner Bars

Another plastic-free switch I’ve made is to all-natural and Canadian-made shampoo and conditioner bars! The Bottle None bars I am currently using are vegan, cruelty free, and package-free and work just as well as any other shampoo/conditioner I’ve tried! I’ve also found that I’m able to get a ton of washes out of them – enough to replace 2 or 3 bottles of shampoo, which will add up to another huge positive impact on the environment!

    Bamboo Cotton Swabs

A recent switch for me, and one I highly recommend for a plastic-free personal care routine, is to switch to all-natural bamboo and cotton swabs! These are an easy plastic free swap and the best thing about them is that they are fully compostable! Each pack contains 200 swabs and they are packaged in a compostable cardboard box.

    Compostable Deodorant

My final suggestion for a plastic-free personal care routine is compostable deodorant! I have been using the rosemary and sage one we carry from Bottle None, which is all-natural and Canadian-made. It goes on a bit white so be sure to rub it in, but it smells great, lasts all day, and gets the job done. It will last up to a year and the best part is that when you are done, you toss it in the compost!

While these swaps may seem small, they add up to a huge impact over time! There are so many plastic-free alternatives out there, making these swaps in my personal care routine was an easy way of introducing plastic-free alternatives into my life! What are some plastic-free switches you’ve made? If you’re wanting to make any of these switches, feel free to browse our shop in-store and online (not all products are available online).
