The Ultimate Guide to Starting a Zero-Waste Lifestyle!

  • Use Your Compost Bin (or buy a cute one you will use)

It may sound obvious, but a great way to ease into the zero-waste lifestyle is by using your compost bin! One of the first changes I made in my lifestyle was by actually starting to use my compost bin… everyday! So a great way to kick off a zero-waste lifestyle is by keeping your green bin in a convenient place where you’ll actually use it. For example, whenever I cook, I keep my green bin close by because I know if I do that, all the food scraps will go right in the bin and I won’t accidentally toss them in the garbage 🙊! If you use compostable deodorant and cotton swabs, you can also keep a green bin in your bathroom! There are tons of cute, stylish green bins out there that will look great in any room!

  • Switch to Beeswax Food wraps

Another great way to ease into a more zero-waste lifestyle is by using beeswax food wraps! This was an easy change to make considering I’ve never liked using saran wrap. The beeswax food wraps come with different designs and are way easier to use than saran wrap! The beeswax is made malleable from the heat of your hand and helps keep your food fresher for longer!

  • Get a Selection of Tote Bags AND Produce Bags

A third way to ease yourself into a zero-waste lifestyle is something that you probably already practice – using reusable shopping bags! I have found keeping a few tote bags in various places (like your car, kitchen, front entry, etc.) is super helpful so I never forget to bring them with me every time I go grocery shopping. However, an easy way to take this one step further is by using produce bags! You know those thin plastic bags at the grocery store that you can never find the opening to? Well produce bags are an amazing zero-waste alternative to those annoying plastic bags!

  • Use Dryer Balls

Dryer balls are a fantastic zero-waste alternative to dryer sheets! It is crazy once you realize how many everyday items are filled with toxins, and before my green journey, I had no idea that dryer sheets were so harmful. The dryer balls are 100% wool (a natural resource) and work to reduce your drying time and static cling! I use 3 dryer balls for a regular load and 6 for larger loads. If you are someone like me who really enjoys the smell of a fresh load of laundry, you can add a couple drops of essential oils to your dryer balls and your laundry will come out smelling like heaven! If you want to go one step further, you can use all-natural laundry detergent. My favorite detergent currently is the lavender and sage detergent from The Bare Home and the beautiful glass bottles make refilling easy peasy!

  • Refill When You Can!

The final suggestion I have for anyone interested in living a zero-waste lifestyle is by refilling your containers and jars whenever possible! If you are tired of throwing away perfectly good jars, refilling them is a great way to save you money and save our landfills! When going to a refillery, at my shop or anyone else’s, bring your clean & empty jars, let us know what you’d like refilled, we tare and you pay. It is an easy and economical way to help the environment and your wallet!

I hope these suggestions encourage you to live a zero-waste lifestyle! If you already live a zero-waste lifestyle, comment some changes you made when starting your zero-waste journey! #LetsTakeCare💚
